When the Ozone layer we have now was created, Oxygen wasn't in its pure state, but it did exist. The Ozone layer forms by having sunlight and heat reach an Oxygen molecule in the upper atmosphere. Because of the heat and light, the bond of the molecule breaks. The single Oxygen atom will combine with an Oxygen molecule to create our Ozone. The Ozone then absorbs UV radiation from the Sun and turns it into heat. Then the process starts all over again, our Ozone is continuously reforming. The Ozone is important to modern life because it allows us to live on the earth. The Ozone absorbs and blocks out harmful radiation like Gamma, X-Ray, and some UV.
