UV Radiation and its Heath Affects

UV Radiation is short waved electromagnetic light. It's very high in energy, but it's not visible. The main source of UV radiation is the Sun. There are three types of UV radiation; UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. UV-C has the highest energy level, longest wave length and is blocked out by the Ozone. UV-B has the second highest energy level and second shortest wave length. Also, it is partially blocked out by the Ozone. UV-A radiation is the most common radiation to us. It has the shortest wave length and the lowest energy level. Only a small amount of UV-A is blocked out by the Ozone. With UV radiation comes a lot of health benefits and dangers. The dangers include skin damage, eye damage, immune system and DNA damage. Skin damages include Skin Cancer and early aging and wrinkles. In fact, 1 out of every 5 adults who spend a lot of time with direct UV radiation will develop Basal Cell, Squamous Cell, or Malignant Melanoma. Basal Cell is the the most common and easiest to cure. Squamous Cell is treatable, but Melanoma is the deadliest. Eye Damage includes Cataracts, cloudiness of the eye, and Macular Degeneration, loss of central vision. Both are preventable, but Cataracts are treatable but Macular Degeneration is not. Health benefits include Melanin production and Vitamin D production. Melanin is a dark skin pigmentation, which helps block UV radiation from your skin. Vitamin D is important because it carries calcium throughout our bodies.
